Gilbert Allen Gilbert Allen was born in Rockville Centre, New York, and grew up on Long Island. Since 1977, he and his wife, Barbara, have lived in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. The Orchises Press published his fourth collection of poems, Driving to Distraction, in January 2003. He has recently completed a novel and a collectiion of short fiction.

In the beginning was the Word . . . .
Or at least it will be
in the end
when the waves of our pitiful logos, already leaked
to the heavens, returning
to You or Your empty
houseboat, raise
a music of our sphere

long after it has
vanished, a counterpoint
finally measured and priceless because
its black surf
in every channel
is all that is.
