Easter

the precedents were piling up

like old newspapers in a poet's hallway.

grey begat grey.

the talk became more rapid and less inspired.

examples were made of the inveterate,

tangent replaced nuance.

there was a strange crispness in the air

as though someone had rolled back a stone.

trees shivered in the night

as the buttons of the sky popped open.

blame was laid like a dead bird

on every doorstep.
