Vanished

It's winter when we lose them,
flying up
through doors in the sky, like birds
white as talc, cloud-
shredded . . .
              Not a backward
glance—one minute stirring
our dinners with tears, then gone!

                                And what
feathers we find later—and years later
—a storm of feathers.
It pulls the air from our throats.
