"Spirit Bird," 1954 (Morris Graves)

                              dances/ Without motion
                                              Hayden Carruth

More bird

     than spirit: beak,
       feet, feathers,

     blue-white crackling

       to pink at the edge
     then dissolving from

       what is into what

     isn't as the colors
       washed out into a

     watery haze, trans-

       lucent, flickering
     toward spirit: beyond

mere bird.
