The Soldier Simply Disappears

there is nothing enigmatic
about a great love

its source is the same dark
trickle as all mighty rivers

the murmur under the city
we all left our parents for

birdsong follows it down
delicate at first, and solitary

the way damp sheets whisper
as though we were not there

a shrill thing by its end
the diamond shoals

the air thick with tears
and the salt kisses of the drowned
