John Emil Vincent currently teaches at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. His most recent critical book is John Ashbery and You: His Later Books (University of Georgia Press, 2007), and he is currently editing a volume of criticism on Jack Spicer. His poems have appeared in many journals including Spork, failbetter, and Spinning Jenny.

His Anger    


Midfield there is a spout of flame.

We honor it with our dead
at whom of course we're angry.

But the living:
it is inelegant

to hate them. Why spend anything
on what you can abandon?
